"newsroom" starts right now. good morning. i'm victor blackwell. carol has the morning off. with the nation still reeling from the shooting massacre in newtown, connecticut, and engaged in a national debate on gun control, chicago suffered a grim milestone last night, a man was killed in a shooting on chicago's dangerous west side. this scene marks chicago's 500th homicide this year alone. that's up more than 50 from last year. now when we're researching this story this morning, one statistic really jumped out at us. in the past five years, 270 children have been killed by gun violence in chicago. on top of that, there have been dozens of other peopl
, connecticut, shooting, and we've already buried six educators and 17 children. people stolen from their friends, from their family, from all of us. this is ana grace marquez, marquez-greene who loved to count and sing. josephine grace gay, who just celebrated her seventh birthday, and emilie alice parker, who was bright, creative and very loving. so let's have a conversation. it will probably make you angry. now, being angry is not a bad thing. it means this matters to you. gun control, in fact, that phrase alone may enrage some people. how about gun rights? this is one of those topics that we should all be riled up about on both sides of this argument. it means that you're invested if you get riled up. listen, we need to be. we need to be riled up and passionate about this. not everyone will agree, no one, no one plan of action, that everyone agrees, we don't want a repeat of what happened in newtown, connecticut. or milwaukee, wisconsin. or aurora, colorado. and those are just three from this past year. there are others since january, and, of course, many before that. so what? w

the country observed a moment of silence for the 20 children and 6 educators. today there is a walk for peace in newtown, and three more children will be laid to rest. ana grace marquez-green, who lost to count and sing. josephine grace gay, who celebrated her 7th birthday. and emilie alice parker. lots of backlash for the nra for their statement friday. gabby and i are extremely disappointed by the nra's defiant suppose. they could have chosen to be a voice for the own members who want common sense, reasonable safeguards on deadly firearms. but instead it chose to defend extreme pro gun positions that aren't even popular among the law-abiding gun owners it represents. the national rifle association is speaking out on the massacre, saying the answer is to deploy armed guards at schools. and they're not the only ones joining the debate. >> columbine. >> virginia tech. >> tucson. >> aurora. >> ft. hood. >> oak creek. >> newtown. >> newtown. >> newtown. >> newtown. >> how many more? >> how many more? >> how many more colleges? >> how many more classrooms? >> how many more movie theatres? >> how

question, lots of answers. about 200 educators in utah are mulling that over today after attending classes on firearm use and safety. the course of geared toward teachers. instructors are not trying to persuade teachers to carry guns in schools, but to provide the information and training they need in the wake of the newtown massacre. the classes have been going on for some time and some teachers are sold on the idea of arming themselves. others simply want to explore their options. >> i think it's important to have protection because if you don't have it, i feel like we're sitting ducks. >> we're going to help them understand where their moral code and value system really is. until they discover that, they are not prepared to carry a firearm. >> utah already allows teachers to carry concealed weapons in schools. >>> for the second time this month, a man has been shoved to his death from a subway platform in new york city. it happened last night in queens. police and witnesses say a woman who had been pacing and mumbling pushed a man in front of the number 7 train before running down two f

educators feel about giving teachers firearms training? bob hinky is a principal at mountain crest high school. how do you feel about this? >> well, i think the teachers have that right and so i feel like it's okay, but i have some things i'm very concerned about. i personally wouldn't carry a gun or get a concealed weapon myself. the concerns i have is the concealed weapons, i have a friend who just received his a couple of years ago and through the training, they never used a gun and had a gun in the class. i worry about the training that they have to actually fire the firearm and to use it. without endangering others as well. so there things i'm concerned about, having a concealed weapon on campus of course is -- we have strict policies that relate to that to ensure everyone is safe and a teacher if they violated that policy because they don't want to put others at risk either. >> what about having the weapon in school and having a kid possibly have access to it. that opens the door for accidents. >> absolutely. that's one of the concerns. so our policy is that it has to be concealed
? >> she has been reading. she's been doing everything possible to keep up with her education, because that's her thing. she wants girls and children around the world to get educated. >> such an absolutely inspiring story, sad story, too. do we know, have any idea when she is going to get out of the hospital? >> not yet. she still has to do that reconstructive surgery in january. so, some serious therapy that has to happen. >> i assume they will have surgeries throughout, oftentimes it takes a series of surgeries before they can fully reconstruct -- >> doctors are a bit tight-lipped about what they are doing. they are giving her privacy but do know for sure she still has surgery to go through. >> amazing you. the whole world is watching. the other story that we want to talk about is india. there was this gang rape some time ago what can you tell butts incident that sparked all of this? >> a very brutal gang rape on a public bus, miguel. a woman, a 23-year-old medical student, raped and not just brutally raped but also assaulted in a way and thrown out of the bus in a way that left h hanging

these weapons, that's an educational issue. it would have been nice if the nra had come out and reminded their base of support of the importance in this particular area. i think maybe how we should approach this is institute a moratorium for a short period of time. let things cool down, let everybody kind of depoliticize this topic and come at this thing intelligently. the reality of the situation, and i say this remorsefully, i am not convinced that an assault rifle ban is going to curtail this activity. one of the problems is, that in their opwisdom, the firearms industry introduced this particular weapon to the united states general populous, and it's been assumed since that point. you can only imagine how many of these are floating around already. >> i have an interesting tweet that said all recent mass killings were committed by 18 to 25-year-old young men who are white. are you saying we should start profiling white men? >> i think we should ask the question, why is america 30% white guys and 30% of the mass shootings in the last decades have been at the hands of white g guys. i'm
